If you have read more than one of my posts then you have noticed how many links or references I use. One of my passions when I was in my undergraduate studying to be a Math teacher was resources. I found that most of my students struggled was replicating the learned process once outside the classroom. So a chunk of my teaching I devoted to teaching them about resources or websites they could refer to instead of giving up. This helped them have more of a growth mindset and become researchers.
When students see their surroundings as resources they feel less stuck, whether that be math or life. As counselors and teachers, we should be doing the same. We should model for students what it looks like to persevere through the unknown. Then, we should also teach them the humility of research. Needing to research implies that I do not know everything I need to about something, just yet. Teaching them the power of the "yet," as described in this Sesame Street clip shows them that resilience is believing there is another step to take when we feel stuck or like we failed.
For my blog, I want an atmosphere that welcomes research and resources. Why reinvent the wheel, when there is a perfectly good wheel? So many counselors and organizations out there did a phenomenal job of defining, explaining, or creating things to assist counselors and teachers. I would like for this space to be one where you can be one-click-away from countless user friendly tools and explanations. That's why most of blogs almost seem to be "hyping-up" other sites.
Creating resources and finding research is a powerful tool to have in life and pass on. With that, as research changes and I find better resources I will update and change. Researching helps cultivate a culture of learning and adaptability. As a counselor I hope to constantly be learning knew methods and trying new things. When I find something does not work for me, my students, or my school, I want that to be the beginning of a new line of learning, not a stump. There is so much to be learned, let's start reading and let's remember! This is a place all are welcome.
